The sustainable city
About Course
The sustainable city explores how municipalities can create greener, healthier and more resilient urban environemtns through practical, nature-inclusive choices. This course introduces the ecological foundations of sustainable urban planning, with a focus on biodiversity, native planting, habitat connectivity, water management, climate adaptation, soil health and wildlife-friendly public spaces.
Participants learn how roadsides, parks, residential areas, schoolyards, cemeteries, business parks and public green spaces can become part of a connected ecological network. The course also discusses the role of indicator species such as hedgehogs, and shows how small design and management choices can support wider biodiversity goals.
Designed for municipalities, green space managers, policymakers, urban ecologists and community project leaders, this course combines ecoogicalprinciples with practical implementation. It helps participants understand what sustainable urban nature can look like in practice, how to avoid common mistakes and how to translate biodiversity ambitions into realistic measures within public spaces.
By the end of the course, participants will have a clearer understanding of how to assess urban green spaces, identify opportunities for ecological improvement and develop more nature-inclusive strategies for a sustainable city.
