Verscholen tussen de jonge fruitbomen en wilde kruiden van het Carpe Vitam Voedselbos in Elim staat iets heel bijzonders: HedgeHog Hill, het allereerste prototype van de Egelburcht. Deze natuurlijke egelhut is ontworpen door Judith Duinkerken, oprichter van The Hedgehog Program, en samen met lokale vrijwilligers gebouwd als onderdeel van een lopend pilotproject. <\/p>\n\n

Een levende structuur gebouwd met de natuur<\/h4>\n\n

In tegenstelling tot traditionele houten egelhuisjes is HedgeHog Hill een levend bouwwerk. Het is volledig gebouwd met natuurlijke materialen: steen, lagen aarde, takken, bladeren en stro, die samen een ge\u00efsoleerde ruimte vormen die het hele jaar door droog, warm en veilig blijft. De buitenste laag is bedekt met planten en kurk, waardoor een zelfvoorzienende minihabitat ontstaat die naadloos opgaat in de omgeving. <\/p>\n\n

Dit ontwerp bootst de omstandigheden na van natuurlijke egelnesten in het wild, en ondersteunt tegelijkertijd het bodemleven, insecten en inheemse vegetatie. Het resultaat is niet alleen een schuilplaats, maar een klein ecosysteem; een ecosysteem dat zowel de egel als de omgeving waarin hij leeft ten goede komt. <\/p>\n\n

Een pilot voor observatie<\/h4>\n\n

HedgeHog Hill fungeert als de eerste gecontroleerde proef burcht in Nederland. Met behulp van wildcamera’s wordt geobserveerd hoe egels en andere kleine dieren in de loop van de tijd met de constructie omgaan. De verzamelde beelden en gegevens zullen helpen bij het verfijnen van het ontwerp van de burcht voor toekomstige installaties en waardevolle inzichten bieden in het gedrag van egels in semi-wilde omgevingen. <\/p>\n\n

Het pilotproject is onderdeel van de bredere missie van The Hedgehog Program om veiligere, meer natuurlijke leefgebieden te cre\u00ebren voor egels in een land waar hun aantal steeds verder afneemt.<\/p>\n\n
